Sonic the Hedgehog Classic packs SEGA’s original side-scrolling platformer into a phone-sized install, complete with the zone select, the spin dash, and the loop-de-loops that made the series in the first place. How to play
Tap or click anywhere on the canvas to jump. On a keyboard, space bar or the up arrow works instead. Any input starts the run.
There is only one button because that is all the loop needs: time your jumps over gaps and spikes, and let the hills do the rest. Run down a slope and you pick up speed; climb one and you bleed it off. Blue arrow pads add an instant burst if you catch them on the way down. A handful of glowing orbs sit along the route, some at ground level and some that only a well-timed jump reaches, and every so often the track bends into a full loop that carries you around automatically. Every day’s route is the same for everyone, and your best score and streak are saved on your device only. Nothing leaves your browser.
How it compares to Sonic the Hedgehog Classic
Rollout keeps the part of the original 1991 Sonic that still holds up on a phone screen: momentum. Run down a hill and you are faster on the other side; misjudge a jump on the way up and you pay for it in lost speed. The loop-the-loops are here too, rendered as a real arc the character travels along rather than a cutscene.
Everything else is deliberately gone. There is no zone select, no seven-act campaign, no boss fights, no Chaos Emeralds to chase down, and no spin dash to charge up. Sonic the Hedgehog Classic is a faithful, complete port of a full retro platformer, built for players who want the whole game, save states included. Rollout is a two-minute browser toy built around one mechanic from it.
It is also a different game from Sonic Dash, which we also built a browser version of. Sonic Dash is a three-lane endless runner: swipe left, right, jump, slide, dodge a wall of obstacles coming at you head-on. Yes. Once the page has loaded, the game makes no network requests at all. Your best score, orb count, and streak are stored on your device with localStorage, so they survive a reload and never get sent anywhere.
